visual studio .net setup : VS 2005 vstd Setup is looking for file instpia11.exe

Hello,

I was trying to use some asp.net features that seemed to really, really
want SQL Server Express to be installed... So, since I had not installed it
originally, I ran the Visual Studio 2005 change/remove from Add or Remove
programs... And selected the SQL Server 2005 checkbox and clicked next,
etc.

After a while, a message box pops up titled Insert Disk that says "Setup is
looking for file instpia11.exe. Please insert Microsoft Visual Studio 2005
Team Edition for Software Developers - ENU disk [lastdisk] now."

Well.. It's a DVD, and there's only one of them, and it was already
inserted (it had asked for it right from the get-go) so.. I did a search,
and found instipia11.exe on the DVD in vs\wcu - so I browsed to that
directory with the browse button on that dialog box and clicked ok, but I
just got another dialog saying "The chosen path is invalid. Choos OK to
select a different folder."(!)

What the heck? -- I don't konw what to do now.. If I select cancel, it
says "are you sure you want to cancel setup?" - Well, of course I don't..

I googled for it, but only found reference to Beta 2 - and then only with
the installation media apparently being on multiple disks, saying that it
may ask for one disk, but needs another.. Obviously that doesn't help me..
As I say.. There IS only 1! ;)

Any thoughts or suggestions would be much appreciated!

Cheers

Hi Andrew,

Thank you posting!

Based on the error message, is there any chance that you installed your
VS2005 product from a different location, for example in different DVD
driver or from a network folder?

I suggest you can try the following approaches:

1. Copy that specific file to another folder, such as one in your hard
disk, and try again.

2. Delete the stuff in your Windows system's temp directory, and reboot
your machine. Then run the Visual Studio 2005 change/remove from Add or
Remove programs...

3. Delete the stuff in your Windows system's temp directory, and reboot
your machine. Then copy your VSTD 2005 product DVD's files to your hard
disk, and run its setup.exe from the hard disk to change/remove its
component.

These tests will help us get closer to resolving your issue, so I
appreciate your time in performing them. Let me know the results at your
earliest convenience. If you have any questions or concerns, please let me
know. I am standing by to help you.

Thanks!

Best regards,

Hi Gary,

Thank you for your reply, and for your suggestions...

Unfortunately these steps didn't help... However.. I finally started
digging through the log... And I found a line which said something to the
effect of wcu\instipia11.exe -- So instead of pointing it right at the wcu
directory... I tried pointing it one directory up, at the vs directory..
and it was happy!

Thanks again for your time and for your assistance!

Cheers

I just went through this same situation with VS 2008 Express Edition. Your fix also worked for me, thanks!
