I have been wrestling with the installation for a few days now, i have got to
this point. Unfortunately, the error messages are leaving much to be
desired. Anyone with any ideas,

Hi,

It seems that the setup cannot upload the process template file to TFS.
It's possible that a slow network may have trouble handling it. Could you
let me know which version of TFS you're using? RC or RTM?

Thanks for the quick response. The Vsts is the release candidate (not
workgroup ed). Some more info... doing a tracert, yields only one hop
(<1ms). this is a dual server install. the files are located in the correct
location. The app tier is a vanilla 2003 server install, and the reqts from
the vsts install doc.

thanks,

Hi,

There is another person who is also using RC version of TFS having the same
problem as your.

https://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=248992&SiteID=1

Currently, I'm trying to contact the product team on this issue, and will
reply to your as soon as they give me any information. Thank you for your
patience.

Hi Jim,

Sorry for the late response. I just get response from the product team.
They strongly recommend you move to TFS RTM. Based on our research, this
might be a problem in the RC version.

Kevin,

I just worked the install from the rtm version and am still getting the same
error.... this stinks.... same log file as before. i have double checked
and am running the load from the actual cd with the rtm v. numbers for the
assembly (not from a download from msdn), ms.teamfoundation.dll (don't have
the exact name in front of me now, but it was something similiar to that)

Please help, let me know what other info you need, i will provide tomorrow
in the am EST.

thanks,

jim

Hi Jim,

Could you also give me the VSMsi*.txt log file that is in the %temp%
directory (installing account). You can post with your post or email to me.
Remove 'online' from the no spam alias is my real email.

Also, PLEASE check the SQL Server and make sure

1. It is the default instance
2. That it is set to receive remote requests
3. That SQL is not running under a domain account (we've seen some
issues here)

This so looks like a SQL configuration issue. Thank you!

Hi Jim,

Thank you for providing me with the log file. Our product team is working
with us on this issue. Now they assume that the application tier cannot
talk to the SQL Server in data tier. Could you first check if you have
typed all the username/password correctly? You can use the SQL Server
management studio for a test first.

Now we're studying your log file. I'll let you know as soon as the product
team gives me any advice. Thanks!

Sure, I will send you the MSI log file in a few minutes...

Here is the other info:
1. On our sql box, it is set to hit the default instance. Note: This is
an existing sql 2005 machine that we run our development against. We have
had sql 2005 loaded on that machine since early early jan 06. Also, sp1 is
not applied, but the hot fixes recommended are.
2. What do you mean by remote requests? We can talk to the sql box from
all developer machines, query the databases. Since this is a pure sql box
we don't have iis installed or running (is that what you mean)?
3. The sql box is running a domain sql account with local admin rights on
the box. The sql box itself has to communicate on the network under that
service which is why we are running it under a domain account.

Thanks,

Jim

Hi Jim,

What protocols for remote connection have you enabled to the SQL Server?
TCP/IP or named pipe?

You can check it from SQL Server Surface Area Configuration tool.

1. Run the SQL Server Surface Area Configuration tool from the start menu.
2. Select Surface Area Configuration for Services and Connections.
3. Select an instance of SQL server 2005, and in Remote Connections, you
will see if the remote connection of TCP/IP has been enabled. (We prefer
TCP/IP connectionfrom TFS.)

Kevin,

Any word back from the group yet? I will be happy to provide any other info
needed which may help, even if it is too much info. Upper management is
beginning to think the product is "too much of a risk, because jim can't get
it loaded and working" which is completely untrue. We just need to get it
loaded and start using to develop the best practices for our group to
demonstrate the business case for it. Which would be quite easy if i could
get this thing loaded.... sorry for the rant, but i can't imagine my
situation is unique.

Thanks,

jim

Hi Jim,

Sorry for the late response. I understand your current situation. Our
product team is researching on this issue actively. I just heard from them
that they are having another customer who have the same issue as yours. Now
they are analyzing the TFS Integration database.

So can you connect to the underlying SQL server database and copy out the
TFS Integration database file? The file is a little bit large, so I just
created a workspace for you to upload it. The URL for uploading and
password have been sent to your by email.

PS: Since there are a lot of databases created for TFS installation, we
only need the TFSIntegration database.
