visual studio .net setup : VS 2003 SP1 fails w/ missing CAB

Visual Studio 2003 SP1 install has worked just fine on two different XP SP2
machines. However, on two different Windows Server 2003 SP1 machines we get
identical failures. These all used the same .msi file being read form a
local drive and not a network share -- then I also tried redownloading the
file and the error still occurs. The failure message references a missing
..CAB file. The event log entry follows:

Hi Mike,

I attempt to repro the scenario in our local environment, but the VS2003
SP1 could be installed well in a Windows 2003 Server SP1 machine. I also
checked our internal database, could not find a similar case.

In this regard, it seems to be an environment specific problem. I suggest
you can download that VS2003 SP1 package from our website again, then
disable the anti-virus system to install it. If the installation still
failed, it is better for you if one of our CSS support engineers could work
with you. They will have more resources available to help you efficiently
tackle this issue. This may require you to submit a support incident in
Microsoft CSS (Customer Support Service). As a MSDN subscriber, you have
two free support incidents.

By the way, currently the installation issue of the VS2003 SP1 should be
free, you can mention this to our CSS engineer when you raise the incident.

For your reference, I have attached steps to contact Microsoft CSS here:
You can contact Microsoft Customer Support Service directly to discuss
additional support options you may have available, by contacting us at
1-(800)936-5800 or by choosing one of the options listed at:

prophone

Thanks!

Best regards,

Hi, I had the same issue, reinstalled, redownloaded, etc... nothing helped.

I'm running the Symantec Antivirus scanner, and disabled the related services for the antivirus after reading this post. That did the trick for me. SP1 installed just fine, and after rebooting I'm good to go.

I too am having problems installing SP1 with the same error. Even when downloading the update using the install tool it has a corrupt or missing file found and won't finish. This is on three diffrent XP SP2 systems with Symantec running. I'm trying the install without Symantec to see how that goes...
