I am trying to upgrade my VS2005 installation to SP1 on a Win XP box.
It has been running now for 3 hours and the progress bar has not moved
in ages. The task manager is showing that the exe is not getting any
CPU nor is it doing any I/O reads or writes. Is this normal? I've
heard this upgrade can take several hours, however at this rate, it
doesn't look like it will ever finish.

First, let it go until you get some kind of feedback.
Aree you installing over the internet, or did you download SP1 in its
entirety and are you now installing from a local hard drive?
If the current install is over the internet, and it fails, try downloading
the complete SP, then install from a local drive. That technique worked for
me on three machines after a failure over the internet.

Be patient! I've seen exactly the same behaviour. I left my machine running
overnight and next day the installation had completed without issue. I've no
idea what the machine is doing whilst its apparently idle.
