however, the installation stop when the file IIS_default.htm6 can't be found... I ran searches both on my computer and the Win XP CD, and it's not there (and not in the cab files either

Anyone know what could be the problem

Hi, I had the same problem, IIS_default.htm6 not found and I had an original WinXP as well.
I sorted out the problem by manually creating an empty textfile and naming it IIS_default.htm6
The installation asked for other 33 files (htm, gif, asp), I did the same for all of them.
IIS is now installed, but the funny thing is that if you do a search (including hidden and sys folders) on your hd after installing IIS you can't find those files... looks like they're only needed for the installation.

thanks for your solution, I've found a better one:

place the windows CD in your CD ROM before starting your IIS instalation, that will avoid the error
it took a while to find out
