inetserver iis : Internet Information Services help

Hi:

Has anyone used Windowx XP's Internet Information Services 5.1?

I am trying to set up my PC as an FTP server, so other people can access it
(and download files, etc.) from another computer but I haven't had any luck.

I already did all the steps and everything but I'm starting to think that
maybe this is not possible and I would have to be in a server and not in a
simple PC connected to a DSL provider.

I tried to log in to my PC with an user name and password that I created
from antoher computer with my IP address but it never makes it.

I already disabled the firewall by the way.

Anyone know if this is possible and if not, are there any other ways besides
Windows Internet Information Services to make this possible?

Thanks,
Kristofer Gafvert

The FTP service in Windows XP works. Perhaps your ISP blocks the necessary
ports?

Hi Kristofer:

How do I know if my ISP is blocking the ports?

I already called them and they told me that they cannot give this kind of
support, but just for problems with my conection to the Internet.

If I do and FTP from my PC I can connect but not from the outside.

Thanks,
Roberto

Your ISP should be able to tell you that.

You can also run ShieldsUp and test the port:
http://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?rh1dkyd2

But if this says that the FTP port is closed, it can be either a
misconfiguration by you, or your ISP blocks the port.

Kristofer:

I already executed the ShieldsUp utility and all the ports (includying port
21) are closed, even when I disabled the firewall.

I don't think my ISP would open that port for me (in case this is the
problem), or what do you think?

How do I know if this is a misconfiguration from me, or my ISP has blocked
the port?

Any other ways to do the FTP?

Thanks for your help,
Roberto

Your ISP will probably not open the port.

You can only find out if it is a misconfiguration by checking your
configurations. I cannot give any more detailed instructions, because i
know nothing about your network nor setup. But perhaps you have a router
with a firewall? What about a software firewall?

You can use FTP on any port, but if you use a nonstandard port you will
need to specify the port in the FTP client. But you still need to open the
port(s) you use.
