I have a windows 2000 Advanced server with iis 5.0. Every 2-3 days users are
unable to connect to the website. While users are unable to connect I can
telnet to port 80 which shows iis is listening. Is there anyway I can

What are the users seeing when the unable to connect? Are they getting a
specific error? Do they just get an hour glass? What are the server
properties when the site is in this state, is there high CPU usage, high
memory usage? How do you usually resolve this, do you unload the site's
application pool, reset IIS, or reboot? With a little more info, we can
probably narrow down possible causes.

Thank you for your quick reply. Users see an hour glass and it just hangs
there. Afert restarting IIS everything is back to normal for 2-3 days. Memory
and CPU uage are very low. Looking forward to hear from you.

I wish I have more error message to give you. There is no error in the event
logs, both system and application. Since this issue is intermittent, there is
no pattern. Our NOC calls us whenever users call them up to complain the
website is inaccessible. I can login to the server also can telnet to port
80. Even restarting website won’t bring the site back. But after restarting
IIS everything is normal. Is there any debugging tools I can install to debug
this issue.

Nowhere near enough information to diagnose this. We need full error
messages (turn off friendly errors), event log entries, etc.

It sounds like you are running some web application that is hanging ever so
often.

Hangs cannot be correctly detected 100% of the time, and since nothing
crashed and IIS is just hosting your web application, you are not going to
see errors recorded anywhere. IIS simply cannot figure out that "something
is wrong" in the hosting process if the web application doesn't complain.

It sounds like you need to run a tool like IIS State on the inetinfo.exe (if
low isolation) or dllhost.exe (medium/high isolation) that is handling your
URL WHEN the website is not accessible, to see what is getting hung up and
troubleshoot from there.
