as title really. it seems that AOL's spam filter blocks all mails sent via
CDO. Does anyone know of a way around this, or does anyone know if the
problem exists with any other mail component, such as Jmail?

Do the message headers indicate error 550?

It may be that your SMTP server is considered a open relay.

550-The IP address you're using to connect to AOL is either open to the
550-free relaying of e-mail or is listed in the Dial-Up List operated by
550-MAPS (www.mail-abuse.org). AOL cannot accept further e-mail
550-transactions from your server until either your server is closed to
550-free relaying, or your IP address is removed from MAPS Dial-Up List.
