flash (macromedia): There's been a couple of posts on the subject of using scenes the last
couple of days, which in my humble opinion are not correct in their advise.
The general advise is not to use scenes at all, as they would work in an
unpredictable way or something like that. The truth has somewhat more
nuance:
Scenes are there as an authoring convenience and and such can be used
safely.

HOWEVER; problems might arise if you start referencing scenenames in
actionscript. I will not elaborate on this because hundreds of people have
done that before me, so you can look it up. Just don't do it. If you want to
reference a frame (be it the first frame of a scene or not), use framelabels
for reference.

If used wisely I believe that scenes can make a workflow more efficient.
Hope this clears things up.

John

Hi John - these pre-emptive posts of yours are great....

Oops, except that about 4/5ths of current MM NG users don't seem to bother
searching before they post... :)

Yeah, well I know. Whatever; just thought I'd give it a shot ... or
something like that. Had nothing better to do in those 2 minutes ;-) Thanks
for the support.

Cheers,

John

Great posting! However, I have a question. If scenes are used for development, at what time and most importantly, how do they get eliminated of the file which will be published?

The only thing I can think of is copying the whole animation (or what not) of a particular scene into the main timeline, put a label on the first frame of this section and start referencing the section by the label.

Another idea would be to make the scene a movie clip and then bring it into the main movie.

Am I on the right direction or am I so far off that's not even funny.

You can keep using scnes, don't have to do any copy/pasting whatsoevr. Just
make sure that you have a framelabel in the first frame of every scene if
you're using scenes in your navigation. Use the framelable name for
reference.
On export as swf a file is created that merely consists of one long
timeline. So what is the first frame of your second scene would become maybe
frame 50 in the final swf. Scenes are gone. Capice? If you want more info;
there have been hundreds of posts on this subject; check the google archives
(link below).

John

P.s. Thanks for the kind words.

[quoted text, click to view]
of a particular scene into the main timeline, put a label on the first frame
of this section and start referencing the section by the label.

The scenes ARE the main timeline already .. the main timelines is just each
scene in order

Are you perhaps confusing movie-clips with scenes. Movie-clips are fine and
remains as movie-clips in the exported SWF and don't really need any special
consideration like scenes do.
