flash (macromedia) : Flash MX 2004 in a Java app

I would like to have a Flash 7 swf run within a Java application, and be able to pass events/messages between the Flash movie and the Java app. Before I spend to much time researching the issue or attempting to create a solution, I'd like to know others opinions or experience with this. Has anyone ever attempted to do this? Is it possible? Are there any limitations to consider that might make make this infeasible? I've used Screenweaver and Flash Studio Pro to "wrap" my movies, but I'd like a platform independent solution, and one which is much more extendible. Java seems to be the route to go.

Thanks for your thoughts and advice!

Have a look at the XMLSocket object. Probably your best bet.
