flash (macromedia) : Nested MovieClip vs. External SWF

I'm looking for an opinion about best practices of using nested movieClips vs. external SWF files.

There's advantages to both, so I'm just wondering how other people address this issue.

I'm sure that total filesize will play a part in the decision. What about the method of delivery (web based, CD, etc)?

Currently, I'm working on an autorun CD that includes a navigation menu and a digital form of our employee training manuals (many chapters and many pages).

Any thoughts on this would be great.

Hi There

I too use Flash to develop CD based learning materials. personally I use a combination of both nested and external mc's.

I dont hink that there is any hard and fast rule of thumb for the choice. Clearly larger files separated is a good idea. Also complexity may be a deciding factor, if the mc is complex maybe it should standalone so that you can test versions of it without having to touch the main peice.

I also have to develop multiple units within one module, for simplicities sake I keep these as separate swfs

Smaller, 2 frame contextual help files, I incorporate into the movie, they can read in external text as appropriate.

This has probably been of very little help at all, sorry, but I reckon you should experiment and just do what feels right.
