flash (macromedia) : eraser tool

heres my bid for dumbest question of the day. i'm dragging an instance of a logo onto the stage with the intention of erasing it bit by bit & then reversing the frames when i've erased it all so it appears to be being written on screen.

when i try to erase part of the logo it just reverts back to its original state when i release the mouse, yet if a just draw a shape next to it i can erase that with no problem. i've checked the flash help files & a lot of tutorial sites without success so i'm obviously doing something VERY basically wrong. i'd be very grateful if someone would take the time to help me out.
thanks
paul

You need to go "inside" that movieclip/button instance by double-clicking on
that instance on the stage.

To save breaking it apart, you could have put a mask above the logo, and
"grown" the mask frame-by-frame, using any of the drawing tools. You will
probably save on swf size, get a smoother result, and won't have to reverse
the frames. Since you're not damaging the logo, you could also tinker with
it more easily later.

But if it's done now, you may just have to move on ...
