flash (macromedia): When using lines in my movies, my projects slow down dramatically.
The lines were grouped together and turned into a graphic symbol...
Is there a way to optimize the amt. of space these lines chew up..??

hard to say without seeing it -did you use the line tool or paint brush to make the lines? is it fullscreen? what's the frame rate? need mor einfo - what machine are you testing on? MAc PC? Processor speed? ram? etc....

Thanks for your reply Chris.
I'm on a PC.
My project is running at 15 frames/sec. I made the lines with the line tool.
The lines act as a texture to fill a space about 300x200 pixels.

These lines slow everything down.
I went into Photoshop and made an alternate version of these lines and imported the jpeg.
This made the actual .swf larger, but the runtime was perfect.
Very weird....can't figure it out...

ahhh - well, not that surprised actually - flash is dynamic - it's not like video playback - flash movies render on the fly for lack of a more technical explaination - the frame rate in flash does not necessarily mean you will always achieve the frame rate you set - especially if it's set to high with too much animation and a slower processor.
so these lines were not even animated?

The lines are static, basically functioning as a background. I was hoping there was some kind of tool to basically "merge" the lines into a collective whole.
I tried preloading it as well...and still nothing.

I guess I should stick with the jpg.

BTW...I checked out your website...that's some cool stuff.
I grew up in MA ... always wanted to work at Soup2Nuts.

thanks urami.
i think that's the way to go..

http://www.2advanced.com/ uses similar technique - a friend of mine just now MSN'd me asking how they do theirs - if you scale it, it remains crisp - so it must be vectors - but their are thousands - interesting issue.....

thanks about my site....i worked at the Soup for 6 years. been on my own for 2.

[quoted text, click to view]

is it some sort of fine grid ?
over all , anything that is big , complex (made of multiple shapes) will be
cpu intensive if set to tween or color effect.
Perhaps you could use transparent gif for the lines , 1000x1000 pixels gif , with every alternate pixel color line , single color , would not be
larger than 4 Kb.
Upon export from SWF with smoothing OFF about 0.5 KB .
Much more friendlier than vectors in some cases .
