flash (macromedia):
I am trying to display designs of military-type coins for work and would
like to create an animation so I can show both sides of the coin. Is there
a way to do this in either Flash or Fireworks? I have MX2004 versions of
both. I am fairly proficient on Fireworks but just learning Flash. Any help
would be greatly appreciated.

Beside frame by frame animation there is not much options in flash as there is no actual
spin option.

you would motion tween and squeeze to simulate that.

Say you have flat circle facing you , make it some symbol , movie clip or graphic.
Make motion tween from frame 1 to 10 than to frame 20.
On frame 10 , use the transform tool (key Q) to squeeze the circle , almost so it is
not visible , very thin. Now if you play it , it will make impression like it rotates.

Thanks, I think I can do that. Appreciate the help.
If anyone knows a better program that can do a spin option, please let me
know.

i am a 3d hobbiest, so I of course think a 3d app would be ideal for this. it would definately create the most realistic effect, and a spinning coin is extremely easy in any app.

but 3d apps are expensive. However, there's an open-source 3D app called Blender, which is free yet you can use it for commercial purposes. check it out.

coin could be done by a cylinder and displacement, plus texture. :)

cheers

Swift3d from http://www.erain.com/ can easily make spinning 3d , which later can be imported

A simple spinning coing could be done fairly easily in SWiSHmax. Make two
coin faces, give each one a 3D spin. Show the front half spinning 180deg,
then back half spinning 180 degrees.

You may be able to do this with SWiSHpowerFx addin for Flash MX 2004 .. but
its probably only a few dollars more to get SWISHmax.

Also look at the swift 3d plugin for MX 2004 .. it may be able to do what
you want as well.

Here's a simple example with nine random spinning 'coins' done in SWiSHmax.

http://www.swishzone.com/max_swi/Spinning-Coins.html

Note that they are 'flat' .. if you want coins with thickness, then you'll
probably need to go for a true 3D package.
