flash (macromedia):
I want to take certain layers and masks from one movie's timeline and incorporate it into a different movie. How can I do this (or is it even possible)?

Make sure the layers are not locked, by default mask layers will get locked.
Than highlight frames you like to copy, layer mask and masked than hit CTRL ALT C (copy frames)
and paste into new file using CTRL ALT V (paste frames).
It will preserve the layers options (masks and guides)

Copying and pasting was my first thought but for some reason it didn't work. However, when I followed your advice closely, it did.

Thanks!

Great you got it working ...
It could be the lock on the layer. While making Mask layer it will automatically
get locked, it is for us to be able to preview the mask right away.
You can't copy locked layers so my guess is that this was the problem .
Other layers never get locked by default :)
