flash (macromedia): Right, this is a bit hard to explain but i'll give it a go...

Basically I downloaded a flash website template which is made up of about 5
different .fla files

One of them is a background image with links to the other 5 .fla files, eg
homepage, contact etc

When I click one of these links it will play the other .fla file ontop of the
background .fla file as if it was on another layer, so u can see them both at
the same time - one on top of the other.

This only works if all the .fla files are in the same local folder.

The problem I am having is when I import the background .fla file into a html
doc in Dreamweaver the links no longer launch the additional .fla files ontop
of the background fla file. I have copied all the addtional .fla files into the
website directory too.

Have you ever encountered this problem or do you know the solution?

SOund like a mismatch path.
You must be referring to the SWF from your html in some other than the html directory , isn't ?
Can you paste just the object embed tags or provide url with that sample ?
