flash (macromedia):
would people toss up some ideas on how to improve the smoothness of flash playback...

http://www.billybussey.com/ << check this out

this site runs super smooth, sometimes there are jerks, but in all it's smooth animation

I see a lot of sites that aren't, they seem to load slow and still run slow, but I've seen sites where bitmaps
just seem to fly across the screen...

http://www.joesparks.com/dj/introtheme/

This animation by Joe Sparks runs smooth as well, but notice how much motion is going on..

What are the secrets no one is telling? Where do I go to get exposed to them.

The Joesparks animation you linked to is purely vector art. Flash is capable
of rendering vector animations alot better than massive amounts of bitmap
sequences. I tested it on my laptop (a 1.5ghz Centrino) and my desktop (a
dual Xeon 3Ghz HT) and simply put, the site skips alot less on the desktop,
but still every once in awhile. It may just be something you'll have to live
with, having chosen to go with possibly the most bitmap-heavy Flash site
I've ever seen.
