flash (macromedia):
First question, can you stream a swf file?
Second, to stream a FLV do you need a Flash Communication Server?

Thanks

The file itself is streaming format. It play at it loads .
If you load FLV you can set up to stream or event , if set to stream - play as it loads , if set to
event - play once all loaded.
Now , with SWF is slightly different . To have perfect stream best to place the video and sound on
separate layers. Than set the layer with audio to stream .
Why split both ?
Well , first you can have better quality video while lower down the sound.
Or the opposite . Plus you can continue to work on sound compression to find best and most
satisfying quality w/o effecting the video whatsoever

here is a sample of a stream SWF with video .

check and see whether the streaming and playback is what you after .

The streaming video at www.flashfugitive.com/ang-zhang/video....would you mind
taking the time in simple terms to break down the settings etc and process
which has been used to create it - to a beginner.

I'm editing and exporting videos via final cut express - what should i export
them as to import into flash to get the same streaming you've achieved here,
and what are the settings used in flash. And why does setting the audio to
streaming make the whole thing stream....and do you use a preloader...and how
do you create the load bar at the bottom...sorry for all these questions but it
would be fantastically helpful - and by the way the mac video is hilarious!

Let me start with clarifying few things.
Flash SWF is streaming file type. Meaning - it start playing while it loads.
Frame by frame , if a frame data has been loaded it proceed to next frame and so on.
Preloader does not change that . What it does is , holding the timeline from playing
till all the frames get loaded so you can see smooth playback , but the file still streams.
We take advantage of the file playing nature and use STREAM sound to synchronize the audio
with video .
Let me paste link to post where I explain the difference in Event and Stream sound.
http://groups.google.com/groups?q=+Sound+Continues+While+Movie+Pauses+on+Frame+group:macromedia.flash.*&hl=en&lr=&selm=3E9F60A4.8EE3F70F%40flashfugitive.com&rnum=1

Having read that you know why do I need stream sound and separate video .

The player in my sample loads the file into movie clip holder , check the total frame loaded and
change X position of the yellow stripe as the loading progress, it checks the position against the
size of the main bar beneath it and adjust it accordingly to reflect the cached data.
It's just few lines of actions script, you can let me know you mail address and I'll
forward FL source so you can study it .
If you don't want to expose your mail to spammers on forum , you can send it to me at :

Please topic the post " Video Player", i'm away and I don't read all the mail , accessing remotely
takes time to download and operate trough especially that I'm on wireless and slow connection here.
