I agree with Urami--I don't think you can use the eyedropper on a locked
layer, and that is probably for the best. Perhaps you can temporarily place
a second copy of the bitmap being traced in a different unlocked layer just
for color picking purposes. Fwiw you mention other programs for
auto-tracing, but flash has it's own trace bitmap function you might want to
experiment with if you have not tried it.

Maybe I'm missing something here but it's very easy to eyedrop colors from a locked layer.
Just click on the color box, the cursor will then turn into a eyedropper, now move the
cursor onto the image and select a color...

I like to "vectorise" bitmaps by hand for styling my work and reducing file
size. I know there are programs out there that will do this sort of thing but
I prefer to d o ti by hand as you tend you tend to get a better result. I find
tracing the lines easy enough, but what is really time consuming is unlocking
the layer which the image is on, selecting the eye dropper, selecting the
colour, then locking the layer again so I can fill in the details on the layer
above! Obviously hit 'I' to bring up the eye-dropper, but what I really want
to know is how can I get the eyedropper to select the colour I click regardless
of whether the layer is locked or not?

McDLT;
It does not seem to work in flash 4,5/win98se or in flashmx/xppro
here--what version of flash/platform are you using? -Tom Unger

Win2000, Flash MX

I know that it works in 98 though.

Just click on the fill color from the toolbar, then move the cursor onto the screen, then
click again and it will grab whatever color it is over....

well , you can't .
Which isn't rally a bad thing .
It would be very tedious to work with it if it did pick colors from locked layers.

I work often on multiple gradients. Don't like to make one gradients composed of 5 or 10 shades as
it's hard to control it. SO I place alpha-to-color gradients on top of each other across 3 or 5
(depends) layers. Say chrome ball for instance.
If I had to pick gradients sample which is laid on top of another , w/o locked layer it would be
picking one I don't need. Flash would not know what layer is at your will at the moment , especially
working within multiple layers at one time it could be really pain in butt.

Yeah, I agree about the eye dropper tool being able to select from any layer
locked/unlocked would be difficult to work with, what I was hoping for was a
keypress in conjuction with a click that would allow me to do so.

The problem I have is that if you put lines on the same lame as a bitmap, the
lines leap behind the bitmap, and no amount of messing around with arrange will
bring them back to the front. Which means a stacked layer arrangement for
working which makes things slower because of all the locking and unlocking
required.

Ahhh-I see. You are not using the actual eyedropper tool as such (which
does not work on locked layers as reported). You are using instead the
"dropper" which appears when selecting swatches with the fill tool. Good
suggestion--that should offer a usable workaround for the OP's purpose.
