You might be able to recover it with an undelete software like this one:
http://www.executive.com/undelete/undelete.asp

Be careful not to install it on the same drive as the lost file or it might
overwrite the file space you are trying to recover.
The fla may be damaged and no good, but you could give it a try anyway.

We have been saving a file under the same file name throughout the day in Flash
MX 04 on a Mac OS X system. During the last save today the file/program froze.
We ultimately had to Alt-Option-Escape to unfreeze the system.

When we tried to open the file the file was not in the directory we had
originally saved the file. The only way to reach the file was to open Flash
and look under recent documents. Unfortunately this file was not complete and
did not include most of our work from the saves throughout the day.

Is there any way to restore from one of those prior saved versions throughout
the day?

no there is no such option.
I know it's not going to help you much but it is good practice
to continue to save as TWO different names now and than especially with
any major changes. FLA are easily corruptible , they blow up sizes and once damage,
beyond recovery. Having two copies is the only way to prevent you from something like that.
