flash (macromedia):

Hy all

I am new to flash and to develop my website all my tools are free. I don't
use flash yet but it is so irresistable...

However I am facing an ugly problem with it: it looks like I have to buy
their Macromedia Flash MX bla bla bla to be able to create any kind of
animation.

Is there any other way or tools to create a .swf file ?
I searched the web a little and nothing. Even openswf showed no tool to
actualy compose or create .swf files

Is it at least realistic to try to write the .fla by hand if I know
ActionScript (or anything else would be used) well enough? As a developer I
usualy study the refrence documentation for my language and could learn
ActionScript quite easy, should it be a viable alternative...

Thank you

Illustrator, Freehand and Photoshop allow you to export layers to swf.
This is good for animation only - no interactivity, no timeline control.
But for illustrative animation, it's a good way to work - the same way
artists of your worked with cels in the pre-digital animation studios.

There is a tool called Mediator 7 ( http://www.matchware.net ) that
allows you to make interactive multimedia projects and export it to
SWF among other formats. It's not free, but it is cheaper than
Macromedia's Flash.

A very quick check at SourceForge finds
Ming, F4L, DrawSWF, Spalah Flash,
ScriptSWF, FreeMovie, and SWF Authoring.

There are more, that's just the first page of
search results.

Are you familiar with the term STFW?
