flash (macromedia): I have a quick question for you. I work as a broadcast engineer for Social
Security Administration and I am interested in designing ?instructor friendly?
quizzes for my instructors who teach daily classes via satellite. I would like
to create two stand alone applications. One would be for the instructors to
fill in the blanks: what is question one?, what are multiple choices for
question one?, what is the correct answer for question one?, what is question
two? What are multiple choices for question two? What is the correct answer to
question two? ?? and so on. This first program would have to be ran as a stand
alone on a computer without Flash MX installed on it. The instructor would
then be able to save questions and answers to a floppie.
The second program would be the actual Quiz (game) played on air. I need to
be able to load instructor?s questions and answers into another stand alone
program that would plug the data into the game. If I were going to make a tug
of war game, let?s say, and team one got answer one correct I would need an
?if, then? situation that would move rope and team one in a certain direction.
I guess my problem is, being able to save variables onto a floppie to be used
by other programs and building a program to do that. Any advice you could me
would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
-Mike

I have a quick question for you.

The answer is probably not as quick but a couple of points here taht might help

Flash can run as a standalone on a PC by creating a projector(exe) file
Without third party software it cannot write to a .txt file but it can write
to a shared object which is created and stored locally - a second flash piece
could read this
And creating an animation such as a tightrope competition could indeed be
created to reflect the scoring but all that is a little bit of work to do and I
dont have time right now - sorry - but if I can help Ill try

Interesting project. It's pretty involved - are you fairly experienced with
actionScript? If your only problem is saving the data out as some kind of
file (XML would be best;) to a floppy, then worry not - for the PC there are
several 3rd apps that enable this functionality in Flash projectors:

http://www.screenweaver.com
http://www.flashjester.com
http://www.northcode.com

I have used Screenweaver and found it excellent, even if the documentation
is slightly below par. You could either force a write to floppy, or allow
the user to choose where to save their work.

Actually, I'm fairly new to the world of Flash. I have just completed a book
called Flash MX HOT (Hands-On Training). The book was pretty limited when it
came to actionscripting. I did a few projects using BASIC with my Commodore 64
back in the day so I understand the logic. I like what I see in Flash and am
excited to put it to work. I checked out the sights that you suggested but
still seem to be in the dark for the most part as far as where to start.
Thanks for your response.

I have to say it's an ambitious project for a beginner.

Those sites sell products that would allow you to reliably save files out to
disk from a PC based Flash projector. They don't do it for you - you still
have to write the scripts yourself.

To take you through a project like this it step by step isn't practical on
this forum - it could generate about as much text as that book you just read
;)

You will need a good understanding of actionScript to accomplish this task.
You could take some lessons, get yourself a book, or there are plently of
great free tutorials online.
