Publishing quirk in MX 2004

flash (macromedia): I have a number of flash movies that I created using in Flash MX and published
as Flash 5 .swf files. (They're in Flash 5 for a specific reason.)

However, when I open these files in MX 2004 and publish them (as Flash 5
..swf's), the files that's created is not only different than the one created by
publishing in MX (considerably smaller), it doesn't work properly. Movie clips
don't display, code doesn't get executed, etc. If I open the same .fla in MX
and publish it, it works correctly.

Has anyone run across this?

Are you using any MX 2004 components? Maybe it fails to compile these
components, because they are not compatible with Flash 5.

For the most part, MX 2004 components compile down to Flash 6 .swf code.

Anyone else, let me know if I am off base here.

As far as I know, I'm not using any MX 2004 components. I'm seriously just
opening the .fla I created in MX and trying to publish a Flash 5 .swf. I
don't get a compiler error or warnings or anything, but when I try to run the
..swf, it seems to screw up simple commands (like attachMovie commands that work
in the other version suddenly don't).

There's a specific reason why it has to be Flash 5, I don't have the luxury of
being able to compile down to 6. (which would make my life easier in a lot of
ways)

No you are not alone. I have run into the same problem and had to modify code
to get the functionality back to what it was before. I have a few cases where
FLA's were developed in MX and don't work in MX 2004. One thing that hit me
hardest was that many of my older movies used relative addressing such as
.../../ relative addressing for targets and this seems to be no longer supported
in MX 2004. Changing the pathing to _parent._parent, etc. solved most of my
problems although there were a few files I had to abandon and rebuild from
scratch.

Hi,

Also there'll be a problem if you have any switch/case statement.
