I've only been working with Flash for a couple of months now, in order to
develop some e-learning for my company (but mostly so that I can get these
skills under my belt and onto my resume to go elsewhere). I went to a
conference of e-learning designers and they all said to jump right into the
actionscripting. I took a one day class on it and although I was a little
disappointed with it when I left, I am thankful I took it because it
jumpstarted me. That said, it certainly isn't a requirement if you've
already done some scripting as you said in your post. The main thing is
understanding basic programming, which I got originally from knowing C. It
just so happens that I was at a large bookstore this evening with my wife
and I took a look at the different actionscript books they had there.
Everyone recommends the Colin Moock book, which was priced at $55 (I believe
it is cheaper online though) and is a big book. I looked through it and it
looked very good, but I'm hesitant to buy it myself because it is for v1 AS
and I'm using MX2004/V2. There was a Macromedia ActionScript Dictionary for
v2 and that looked pretty good and was less than half the price.
Also, don't forget the actionscript dictionary that is free from within
Flash - I have found it very useful, particularly the example code, and a
lot of the books I looked through tonight mimic that layout but with more
detail.
To summarize, I'm no expert so hopefully others will chime in, but from what
I saw of the 5 or so books on AS that I looked through tonight, most of them
were good.
