I want to buy a reference book for Flash MX 2004 Action Scripting and need
recommendations so I don't blow a fortune on a dud book.

I am a graphic designer with pretty solid understanding of Flash basics and
some Action Scripting but need to start doing more interactivity including drag
and drop and graphic quiz files that score correct answers.

I am not a programmer though I can dable and hack some Actionscript and
Javascript.

I've only been working with Flash for a couple of months now, in order to
develop some e-learning for my company (but mostly so that I can get these
skills under my belt and onto my resume to go elsewhere). I went to a
conference of e-learning designers and they all said to jump right into the
actionscripting. I took a one day class on it and although I was a little
disappointed with it when I left, I am thankful I took it because it
jumpstarted me. That said, it certainly isn't a requirement if you've
already done some scripting as you said in your post. The main thing is
understanding basic programming, which I got originally from knowing C. It
just so happens that I was at a large bookstore this evening with my wife
and I took a look at the different actionscript books they had there.
Everyone recommends the Colin Moock book, which was priced at $55 (I believe
it is cheaper online though) and is a big book. I looked through it and it
looked very good, but I'm hesitant to buy it myself because it is for v1 AS
and I'm using MX2004/V2. There was a Macromedia ActionScript Dictionary for
v2 and that looked pretty good and was less than half the price.

Also, don't forget the actionscript dictionary that is free from within
Flash - I have found it very useful, particularly the example code, and a
lot of the books I looked through tonight mimic that layout but with more
detail.

To summarize, I'm no expert so hopefully others will chime in, but from what
I saw of the 5 or so books on AS that I looked through tonight, most of them
were good.

I'd thoroughly recommend Flash MX 2004 Actionscript by Dereck Franklin and
Jobe Maker. It concentrates on pointing out the differences between AS1 and
AS2 implementing the projects of which there are many in AS2.Its published
by Macromedia Press ISBN 0-321-21343-2

Thanks for the advice. I managed to pick up Sams Teach Yourself Flash MX Action
Script by Gary Rosenzweig for $10 in a sale and it is proving to be very good
for my needs. I am not finding MX 2004 has any problems with what I am coding
at the moment.

I will follow up your other recommendations once I have got all the basics
from this book.

Drapple,

I agree with Chelsea about her recommendation...it's a good book with good
examples. It's more thorough and has more depth than the Sam series. Colin's
book is an absolute must as a reference book that you need to keep close to
your computer.

Hope this helps!
