He means if you want to animate something sliding onto the stage from
off stage left, you have to drag it off the stage in the first keyframe.

Are you using MacOS or Windows? You may be confusing the "stage" with
the Flash work space in Windows because the Windows version uses the
"single-document" interface where all the windows, maximized or not,
reside within one big Flash window.

Dragging off the stage works fine on my Mac...

I don't understand what you're trying to do.
You're trying to drag an object outside of the movie size boundaries, or
outside of the window?
What do you call the "work space"?
Why do you want to drag objects outside of the stage?

Okay,
Here is a question my Flash teacher couldn't answer and I simply can't believe
it so I'll give it a shot here.

Every time I try to drag an element off stage into the work space it will give
me the red circle with the line through it not letting me animate on and off
stage. I end up resorting to taking the element to the edge of the stage and
using the arrow keys to get it on and off but I simply CANNOT believe
Macromedia did this --so what am I doing wrong--is there a setting that needs
to be changed or something?

Thanks!

I was hoping you wouldn't say that. I am working in Windows--

In the same vein, is there any way to *increase* the workable area of the
Stage?
For example, if I zoom out my document window to 12%, the Stage size is only a
small box of 2000 x 1800. So if I have a an object that is 2200 x 1200 for
example, I can't work with all of it. See what I mean?

Heh, as it turns out, my question is just the opposite to the solution above

I tried the shift - cntl - w and that works fine, the Stage is limited to
document size. Do you have a command prompt that will give me enormous
workable stage size too? ; )

thanks

If you press ctrl+shitf+w is a toggle command that will show you either your
stage area or your work area. If it shows the work area (that means is
checked), then you can see objects bigger than your stage area, you will see
the entire work area. I just tried with a movie of 2000x1800 pixels and an
object 3000x2500 pixels and I was able to zoom out and see the entire object.
So, I really don't understand what problem you are having. Of course, if I
toggle work area off, I onle see the 2000x1800 pixels stage area zoomed out.
