It may be too much work, but you might be able to replace that one
character with a character from a similar font...

I once had to replace all my 9's with rotated 6's to get around the same
problem.

good luck

I'm using Flash 5 to design a navigation bar and everything looks fine when I'm
editing it. When I export it, however, the middle of a capital "P" is filled
in the same color as the rest of the text.

What could be causing this, and more importantly, how can I fix it?

Thanks.

This is a font rendering bug in Flash. Pretty crummy if you ask me. The only
ways to fix it are:
1) Break up Text, sometimes it will fill in the letter anyway, so then you
will literally have to manuelly re-draw taht part of the letter. Sometimes in
redrawing you can speed things up by borrowing parts(paths) from other letters.
2) Attempt to fix up in a font editing program. I've been told(when I asked
this question) that this sort of problem is often caused because the inner path
needs to be reversed. I unfortunetely do not have any font editing software, so
have never been able to play with it.
3) Use a different font. Sometimes this is the only solution if you have large
amounts of text. Sorry.

In my case it has always been Vector based fonts, not raster bitmap fonts.
Still, there must be something unique about how Flash handles fonts that is
highly intolerable to things most apps get around. Like I mentioned, a path
that should be reversed may be all it is(when a path is within a path, the app
must somehow know when to "cut-out" rather than overlay. Path direction is one
way to define this, but I don't know the ins and outs, I'm no fontsmith).

I'm not entirely sure it's a bug. Flash is vector based application and therefor font handling
is difference. Unlike screen print (photoshop) the font is usually not scalable upon export
nor has to be , they usually done and done , once for good. Flash simply do not work well
with screen fonts. Fonts build out of rasters rather than actual curves.
flash has never support well screen fonts and it was not recommended to use them.
Breaking apart won't do any different, redo the font from scratch or simply replace with another
or similar or same look is best way.
If you could upload the sample of text or font name , perhaps we could find you substitute.

I have been using for sometimes now OTF fonts, the Open Type Font which was develop
recently by Adobe in collaboration with Microsoft, font that is Cross OS compatible
and that works for me like charm. I did not use all , there is 2500 fonts in the whole
collection but I have been using many and they all works just like charm.
The filling up font holes only happen to me on screen fonts, especially the
8 to 9 points pixel fonts. Which I replaced with the one design for flash use
from miniml.com and fontsforflash.com .
