Hi there ,
Well , I can't really say it would be influence by personal preference. The programs are identical.
If you doing animation , you don't need pro version , even if you into coding you still don't need
PRO. PRO comes with components , rebuild elements like Media playback or ScrollBars etc...
All that can be found online for free or with intermediate flash skills done by yourself .
In fact most of us do the component own self , macromedia it knows for giving away knockoffs ,
bloatware , badly architecture with many bugs.
After all , they do sale some of them as much as 100 $ each , can't expect them to be too generous
in giving many good quality one if the application itself cost few hundred dollars.
Download demo, demo has PRO/NORMAL switch , you can play around and decide after 30 days.

If you're only into creating animations: get a copy of Flash 5 ;-) or maybe
even Flash 3 or 4
If you are already a hardcore programmer who is used to working with classes
and does not want to step to working with prototypes, get FMX2004
If you can't live with incomplete documentation full of error, get FlashMX
If you're into more than just animating and are not into screenbased
development, hard to skin components, get FlashMX

So basically it depends on your own ambitions.
