I'm assuming that you have copied the files to your hard drive from CD, have
you checked on the files to see if they are locked?

Just a guess

I'm a graphic designer working on updating my portfolio from college. It was
created using Flash 5, and i've only accessed the .swf files and the burned cd
(hard copy) since creating it so long ago. Now i'm trying to use MX to access
(and update) it and Flash tells me that it "cannot open the file", vaguely
enough! Can any of you offer me help with this...opening the original .FLA, or
somehow importing the .SWF to be able to edit it again?!?!

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Seems to be a version difficulty, but I would try creating a new Flash
Document, then Importing it to the stage.

( or did you make it, and protect it from importation? )

This works for SWF files, but imports them without layers, in a basic format.
Making it more difficult to edit, but not imposible.
Hope this works for you.
