flash (macromedia):
hi, i am in need of the same sort of guidance. We need to develop interactive activities/games/tools for our website. So one example is just asking questions like how much do you spend on X and with a user-given number a bar graph moves. Another example would be on one screen you develop symbols on cards, and on the next activity you can move the cards around, or organize them, maybe make a complex pictures with them like a collage. We need the user to be able to pull, drop, move, type, maybe draw. The input that is put into these tools also needs to communicate to a database that is able to generate stats and new picures to go with it and stuff. I know flash in a general way, not an actionscript wiz by any stretch, but no matter what this has to get done. we can invest in flash or we can invest in director (invest meant here in both learning and $$). whichever way i have worked in minimal degrees in both, and I will have to learn a heck of a lot more. one other aspect is these requirements: we can put it on a dvd if needed. We have tried to look up information on this but i dont know why i find i am running in circles. we really need help from people who know what they are talking about. these relatively simple tools/activities are i am sure not as sophisticated as the stuff that many people who will read this, and i dont know they need to be. but we definately need the informed brains out there that know their stuff to give us a nudge in one direction or the other. (oh, i just had a thought...like these activities would have to have some of the qualities of the yahoo! arcade games, esp. Inspector Parker, Word Mojo, and Typer Shark, if that helps) Anyway, thanks for reading, and hopefully someone can help us. Jo
Director = Good for 3d and serious type of games

on top of it Director is more of a raster images , video and sounds , can be handle at ease while flash chokes with most of it . Flash can handle most of it tho in small doses. -- Regards urami_* <hol> http://flashfugitive.com/ </hol> By The way: If you try to mail me , DO NOT *laugh*
It sounds like Flash would meet your needs. In general, I would say that if content for the web *can* be produced in Flash it should be. Many more users have the Flash plugin than the Shockwave (Director) plugin, and the size of the Flash plugin is significantly smaller. Flash isn't as comprehensive in some ways, but is more than capable of handling the type of apps you describe. It is much cheaper than Director, and imho easier to learn. hth p
Comparing Flash and Director is nearly like comparing Apples to Oranges. Maybe in the sense of Games you can, but Flash isn't just used for games. Plenty of Advertisements are made with flash - You don't normally see a Shockwave ad. Flash is used for website headers, website content etc. Plenty that Director is not. Flash has far superior Drawing tools also, so it can be used for illustrating. Flash Player also loads alot faster than Shockwave! Anyway just my two cents. (Adding on to my previous post) Director is used alot for making Win32/Mac software...Flash is not (Unless web-based). Director has 3D features, for 3D environments. Flash does not have that feature either. Shockwave is sometimes used for online games like Flash, but Director isn't normally used for other web-stuff. I guess I don't really know what I'm talking about...but that's just what I've personally seen. Best Regards, Lee ---------------------------- A true geek 4 Flash!
