i don't but one thing you could try is to locate the Flash.exe in the flash 8 folder in your Programs folder: C:\Program Files\Macromedia\Flash 8 right click and and select Properties - Compatibility tab make sure to check the Disable Visual Themes box - restart flash. Also try lowering level of undos. --> www.mudbubble.com --> www.keyframer.com --> Team Macromedia "Two outta three dimensions ain't bad." my fastest machine is a 2.6 with 1GB RAM and a wacom tablet - flash runs great here. --> www.mudbubble.com --> www.keyframer.com --> Team Macromedia "Two outta three dimensions ain't bad." We've in the process of an office-wide upgrade to Flash 8, but a lot of our folks are finding it really sluggish, compared to MX or MX 2004. Anyone else experiencing this? Anyone got any lists of tricks to speed their machines up? So far defragging and running something like CCleaner or RegCleaner have helped...but not a lot. We've already got 1.5 GB of RAM in there, and we're maxing out on virtual mem, etc., but to no avail. Any hints, tips or tricks you've got would be swell! Cheers, Deep (just a guy)
I did not have any lag. ran the same as MX2004 1 gig of ram, 2.5 P4, bus 533, 120 HD
Hmm...you've got a faster processor than some of these machines (most of ours are Athlon XP 1700+ up to 3000+) but we've got 1.5 GB RAM. Only 40 or 80 GB HDD. Most have about 25 GB free, though, so I wouldn't expect that to be the problem... Do you work using a tablet? These guys are working on animated series, so there tends to be a lot of hand-drawn materials, all done with the tablet within Flash...
BTW, thanks for the level of undos thing - missed that post, earlier. Question - the Disable Visual Themes checkbox...I didn't seem to see that on my system? Is that a WinXP thing? We're on Win2K Pro on most of our systems (some use XP, but not many).
yeah - i think that is an XP feature - it made a huge difference for someone else on this forum a short time ago. the only other thing i can think of on win 2K is the Indexing Service might be on - double click My Computer and right click over [C] drive and select Properties - make sure the "Indexing Service" feature (near bottom) is *unchecked* - if it was checked - uncheck it and run a disk cleanup - this will delete a large amount of duplicate files that the indexing service creates (for faster file searching) - it may take up to an hour or more for disk cleanup to delete these files - let it run its course - then restart your machine and then flash. post back here and let me know if this makes a difference. --> www.mudbubble.com --> www.keyframer.com --> Team Macromedia "Two outta three dimensions ain't bad." pknair: compare to flash mx, flash 8 is slower. (my team here using wacom) we havent found anyway to speed it up so far. the most we can do now, is to use fast mode or outline mode for preview. ps: we are trying some method to speed it the workflow for frame by frame animators. we might discuss further if you would like to send me an email: loyhuang@hotmail.com -- Regards, lloyd ------- MSN loyhuang@hotmail.com http://www.flasion.com

Lloyd - i am pretty sure from the original poster's descriptions that they are on PCs. [quoted text, click to view] > > whatsmore, index service is for a fast searching, not able to speed up > application program.
I think you misunderstood - i advised them to *uncheck* Indexing Service to help speed up their overall CPU (not turn it on). I have experienced on many many machines the Indexing Service (when on) can slow down the overall speed of a computer. -regards
well,ehmmm... NTFS and FAT32 are "file system", not an operation system. for windows, it is said that it has NT faimily(winNT, win2k, win2003) and 9x family (win95,98,me,etc) for 9x family, file system can only be FAT or FAT32. for NT family, file system can be NTFS or FAT32. if NTFS is used, Index Service is enabled, otherwise is disabled. secondly, ehmmm, sorry for my misreading the word "uncheck". and you are right, enabling Index Service slows down the overrall speed of a computer. (but please know that this function is for server-level computers, pc users should always tun it down) back to the topic, i m using similar machine as PKNIAR: win2k, FAT32(no Index service), 2GHz, 1G Ram, flash 8 still running sluggish on complex vector shapes (but the same file works fine in MX) i think all we can do is accepting the result, or wait for MM to raise the capability of flash. -- Regards, lloyd ------- MSN loyhuang@hotmail.com http://www.flasion.com
btw, you can check your "file system " whether it is an NTFS or FAT32: right click on any local drive, select porperty, you should see it. -- Regards, lloyd ------- MSN loyhuang@hotmail.com http://www.flasion.com
Index Service is for an NTFS system, most pc are using FAT32 system, they dont have this option. whatsmore, index service is for a fast searching, not able to speed up application program. why flash8 running sluggish? these are the reasons i can think of so far: 1.they put a big program in memory (flash mx is about 32m in RAM, while flash 8 is about 60m). when the program is bigger, i believe that the AI (kind of AI ) should be more complex, which means it will run slower. 2.the user interface in flash 8 is more beautiful, but it needs more resources . as far as i know, this kind of interface is not load from Windows DLL directly, but it needs to be redrew by the application program. (say, a little bit like redrawing vector shape by flash player, it is kind of real time rendering, hence it consumes more resource compare to flash mx) -- Regards, lloyd ------- MSN loyhuang@hotmail.com http://www.flasion.com
