wrap it in a movieclip, then you can use alpha or tint to fade it.

True. It could also be wrapped in a graphic symbol. The point is to
make it a symbol of some kind. Symbols can have Motion Tweens applied to
them, which is what you'll want there. You can "wrap" a text field in a
movie clip or graphic symbol by selecting the text field on the Stage and
going to Modify > Convert to Symbol. Once it is a symbol, add a keyframe to
the timeline at some distance from the current keyframe. Select the symbol
at your new keyframe and adjust whatever properties you like in the
Properties inspector, including Alpha (under the Color combo box). Changes
like this are noted in keyframes -- it's what makes them "key" frames
instead of normal frames: they note key changes -- and you can animate
between keyframes by selecting the span of frames between keyframes and
applying a motion tween (again, look to the Properties inspector).
