flash (macromedia):
I searched for gradient & banding problems and I haven't found much. I'm hoping
someone here might have an answer. I have an imported .jpg in a flash movie.
The .jpg has a gradient as part of the image. The flash movie is rendering the
gradient with bands, kind of like the way a .gif w/ a small color palette
renders a gradient. I didn't notice this on my PC. The project is for someone
who is a MAC user. He sees the gradient banding on his monitor. He's a graphic
designer so I'm pretty sure his monitor is true color. Would an imported .png
render the gradient better? Is there a way in the publish settings to prevent
this from happening. Thanks for the imput.

go to your library and right click, properties and see if the image is being
changed into a gif or something? there really shouldn't be any difference as
long as you publish settings has the jpeg quality at 100. the pic is embedded
into the swf file so flash shouldn't mess with it if your quality is 100. his
resolution may be larger than yours for his screen ,maybe that's why he sees it
and you don't? i'm not real sure, just trying to help.

Hate to say it but banding can appear on anything and anywhere. Adobe Photoshop
fights to prevent banding but even there it cannot always be done -I have seen
articles on their latest efforts to stop it. But as long as the original is
free from it as far as you can tell, and is brought into Flash as a PNG***, you
export as a JPG, and you use the actionscript statement
_quality="BEST"
you have done what you can. If the Mac guy with a microscope wants to keep
pulling your chain after that, take defensive action.

***Or you can bring in as a reasonable quality JPG and check "use imported
data" in Bitmap Properties
