This is the Sync option causing this.
don't feel bad - nobody really knows it exists and it's pretty much undocumented - the help docs i
think define it but dont go beyond that to teach you how and when to use it - so here goes:
Sync is a feature that is available when a motion tween is applied -
click on the keyframe with the motion tween and look at the bottom of
the properties Panel. You'll see Sync with a checkbox next to it. If
this box is selected, then the symbol in the first keyframe will be
forced to all subsequent keyframes there after. it literally keeps a
single instance in sync with the timeline in the motion tween.
What this means for nested animations is that the nested frames will be forced in sync numerically
with the main timeline as well.
So with Sync turned on, you *can't* do 2 things:
1. Can't Swap out a different symbol for the one being tweened with Sync.
2. Can't select instance and type in a different frame number in the Properties Panel.
Deselecting the Sync option and you can literally have 2 different symbols
being motion tweened - yes it is true - as often as we have been told
only 1 symbol per tween, you can literally have "symbol A" in frame 1 of
a motion tween and then swap in a new symbol in the 2nd keyframe of the
motion tween if Sync is NOT selected.
Here's where Flash makes the Sync feature even more mysterious: If you
apply a motion tween by selected the tween from the drop doan menu in
the Properties Panel, then Sync is UNCHECKED. If you like to right-click
between keyframes on the layer and select Apply Motion Tween from the
popup context menu, then Sync will be CHECKED. This is what I consider a
huge incosistency with Flash. I have brought it to the attention of the
Flash team and they were a bit surprised to see it. Yet it remains unchanged in version 8.
Hopefully the next
version will correct this and possibly allow us the option in
preferences to have this on/off permanently.
I love Sync as it can work for you as long as you understand it exists and how it works.
Say you have a long motion tween with several keyframes mid-tween - client says, "Oh, sorry, can you
change the circle moving around to a square?". With Sync on, just swap out the circle in the 1st
keyframe of the motion tween and all subsequent keyframes will automatically be replaced with the
new square symbol.
kinda cool. I could go on but you'll get it after you play around with it. I am writing a book and
plan on talking a lot about this feature - it makes a difference.

is and sometimes I have the line and sometimes I don't.. so I'm using a feature that I don't even
know I'm using... and I don't know what it's purpose is :) . I'm going to be a newbie for a long
long time.
