flash (macromedia):
hmmmm - very complicated - hard to advise without being able to see yur timeline and layer setup -
it may be that your other layers need to be set to "masked" but i need to re-read your post a few
times to understand exactly what you are doing. i have a pretty good idea but hard to really sink
teeth into it.

A very specific problem involving masks Professor Fate

I've been wanting to make a short film involving a boy and his dog, made in
Flash. The idea is that it's a silhouette animation; except that instead of
simple black and white, or other dual colours, I'm using a masked Graphic
Symbol to 'chisel' a hole into a photoshopped, psychadelic background which in
the background is very dull and murky, but through this mask (simply a red
silhouette of the boy and his dog), we see the exact same background, albiet
with bright and garrish colours, perhaps with a very subtle twist or other
alteration. However, I've run into a technical problem: I wish to use a moving
Graphic Symbol as the mask, which mostly works fine, except that as soon as I
add more than one layer (I use a lot of Motion and Shape tweening so I can't
just put it all on the one layer), Flash (for the record I use MX, or 6)
struggles to use it as a mask. Specifically, when treating the Graphic Symbol
(for example, using four layers) as an ordinary symbol, the symbol works
perfectly as a red cut-out of the child and dog, but as soon as I use it as a
mask to view the different background, Flash reverts to the bottom layer only,
meaning that in Mask mode, my Graphic Symbol works as a perfectly functioning
mask, albiet showing only ONE SINGLE LAYER of the Graphic Symbol! Meaning that
where I might have the kid and dog walking along, we get the top half of the
kid just floating there, with no legs, leash or dog, because they're all on
different layers.

I'm quite intent on doing this animaton, so if there's possibly a way around
this problem, I would be very appreciative of any help.
