flash (macromedia) : How do I Target something from a Button?

Comp. 792
1/18/2005 11:18:01 PM
I am trying to understand when to use what in Flash.

I have a menu button named "animation" when the user rolls over the button the
image should appear and disappear when the user rolls off the button.

I am confused as to what actionscript to use for this and how to set it up.

I have read about Telltarget, gotoandPlay etc. How does one know what to use
it's so confusing?

Thanks

I have a menu button named "animation" when the user rolls over the button
named "animation"

I want it to trigger another large image to appear on the page. When the user
rolls off the button named "animation" I want the large image to disappear.

I am confused as to what actionscript to use for this and how to set it up.

when you say "named" animation - that could mean several different things in
flash - hard to tell what you mean:

1. Is "animation" the text on the button?
2. Is the buttton inside a Movie Clipe that has been given the instance name
"animation"?
3. The button has been given a symbol name of "animation" when converted?

the easiest way to do what you want with a simple button in flash requires
absolutely no AS (ActionScript).
simply drop what you want to appear on rollOver in the OVER state of the
button itself.

his original question contained:

"I am confused as to what actionscript to use for this and how to set it up.

what's the problem with a newbie feeling a little confused? Is this place
really THAT bad a forum as everyone says it is? I'm sadly realizing the answer
is yes.

Flash comes with HOW DO I section in help which explain such fundamental flash functionality.
And according to Macromedia Posting rules , to which by the way you agreed when you sign to this
forum, you should familiarize youself with available documentation before posting.
Maybe adobe forum is different but this is not adobe isn't ?
You don't expect people to type your manuals in here just because you lazy to read , don't you ?
You get the basic from your documentation and lessons because that's what they for, than when you go
on with other stuff and have problems, ask here.
Don't get so pissy because you incapable of using your own help files. That's now my fault you know.

_urami's reply was:

That doesn't seemed particularly rude .. just asking the poster had tried
the "how do I" section in help that explains things like this. much better
if user can read the help files and try things and understand themselves.

_urami can appear a bit brisk due to English not being her native tongue.
but it certainly wasn't rude. And _urami had already helped the same person
in their other threads.

Now Comp.792 is behaving like a petulant child and saying "well, if you're
not going to spoon feed me with answers the way I like them, I'll take my
bat and ball and play somewhere else". Fair enough, if that's how he/she
feels, fine, don't slam the door on the way out. But there doesn't seem to
have been any rudeness in this thread (at least to start with), and
certainly none in urami's helpful answers in the other threads Comp.792
posted.

Looks at Comp.792's reaction to urami's post .. he/she starts spouting off
about egos and attitude and calling urami 'self-serving'. No thank yous
from Comp in the other threads posted where urami answered, seems the one
with attitude problems in Comp.792, who insults the people here trying to
help him/her. NOT a very sensible way to behave in NAY forum.

Yes, urami does have a bit of an 'attitude' at times (or comes across that
way), but not to get the reaction from Comp.792 that she did. Not at all
deserved.
