flash (macromedia):
Just a thought. You can purchase a DVD burner these days for well under a
$100. Sure, they don't have all the bells and whistles but they work. I
have one I paid $49 for at tigerdirect.com. Works great. Then VCD is no
longer an issue.

Just a thought.

I have also downloaded numerous swf to mpeg conversion utilities. None of them
seem to work. Does anyone know which utility works best?

I agree that I wouldn't bother with VCD since DVD burners and media are so
inexpensive now.

Yes in flash save it as an mpeg. You dont even need a third party utility if
you have mx2004.

Other programs that you coould load the flash into for mpeg output would be

After Effects
Swish

I know there are a ton of apps out there...

your render settings should be "progressive scan" Meaning you dont want it
interlaced. You should see that setting in the config setup that appears when
you choose your file format. I.E. .mov , .mpeg, .avi etc

SIZE
If your in america use ntsc for you eurpopeans out there use PAL.

hope this helps

I do have MX2004. Will this work if all I have is the .swf file and not the .fla file?

Sure will

Do this

Import the .swf into flash DON'T OPEN IT IN FLASH

When I use the "Import" menu item, all I get is a single item that says "Open
exernal library". It looks for .fla files. It will accept the .swf file, but
seems to "open" it in the way you said not to. The "save as" command is grayed
out; there's no option for saving it to another format.

Can you walk me through the steps?

(I am using Flash MX 2004).
Thanks.

[quoted text, click to view]

That will only work if there is no sound no script and no clips (ie simply
basic flat linear movie)
