i am trying to import a simple vector image from illustrator cs to flash mx.
when i copy from illustrator and paste into flash, i get jagged edges. the
vector image is a simple curved 'B'.

can anyone tell me how i can get the same smooth, curved edge that i see in
illustrator in flash?

Firstly, are you sure it is pasting as a vector .. and not as a bitmap image
of the vector in AI ? Sometime apps can paste in several formats to the
clipboard, and Flash may not be finding a vector image there, so is getting
the bitmap image instead.

Perhaps try exporting from AI into SWF and importing the SWF. Then you are
more likely to be sure of having a vector (unless the curved 'B' is not a
vector in AI as well).

Worth a try.
