I have Macromedia Flash Player 8 shown in WinXP Control Paner-Installed
Programmes.
However when I try to run an swf file it asks which application to use to
open it. Flash Player does not show up among the options. I tried to point
to it manualy using "Browse" button, but Flash Player 8 does not show up in
Program Files. Where is it sitting? What is the name of the relevant .exe
file?

Flash Player is like Java script, it does not run as standalone, it needs browser
environment to work. The player is install on your machine but can be used strictly
within browser.
You can drag drop SWF in browser window to run it or install Macromedia Flash application
on your computer. You will get the standalone player than, it comes exclusively with
the tool for our authoring purpose, it's not publicly distrusted as individual file.

thanks
I am asking because I have a Flash games catalogue implemented in Flash and
then published as WindowsProjector (exe file)
This catalogue.exe file has links which load into it swf files. In such a
context will catalogue.exe form the enviromnent for Flash Player to work?
I have to use swf files because the relevant Action Script function allows
to load swf files only and fails if I try to load an exe file instead.

Yes it will. Once exported to exe flash will wrap its player around the file
so you basically get your own standalone player. That's why the file size increase
