rippling flag effect

Rippling flags are not easy. Lots of curves and distortions. Flash
isn't a good application to make those. You can make them outside of
Flash using a 3D tool, them import the image sequence into Flash. You
can also make flags with a paint program like Photoshop, fireworks,
Paintshop Pro etc using a flag tutorial. Animating them is a real
pain that way though because you have to have the effect move around
in a believable manner. I have done it before with Photoshop, but a
3D program is easier.

I just want to do something pretty simple and put it on a website as a logo. I
want to make a logo look like a flag blowing in the wind and have it play
continously the whole time your on that page. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks for the info. I'll try it in sony vegas and import it in, and if that doesn't work ill try it in photoshop or fireworks. Thanks

here's my blue collar method - i like taking the "sleight of hand" approach and create the illusion
of the flash waving - the hard part most people get stuck on is literally thinking like a flag and
trying to shape tween and/or frame-by-frame.
I find the easiest method is to make a ribbon shape and fill it with a linear gradient to add depth
and then motion tween it through a mask:

It's an old file, tho maybe you find some use for it:

Personally I would make images sequence using After Effect and a
"3d Flag" plugin from company call Zaxwerks
http://www.zaxwerks.com/2004/3dflag.html
It's dead easy and much less CPU intensive than scripting it in flash.

yeah - i forgot to mention that - depending on the image it could get much more complex - maybe i
will make some more samples - some with wavy lines in the flag, stars and another with a complex
business logo - could be "faked" with tweening and skewing - or it could ruin the effect altogether.

SWiSHmax has effects like that as well .. can do various 3D rippling and
waving effects quite nicely

thanks.
I just updated it:
http://www.mudbubble.com/downloads/flagswaving.swf

d/l:
http://www.mudbubble.com/downloads/flagswaving.zip

I abviously added a sky and a few instances of the same flag tinted - but the subtle difference is I
animated the mask and also made one with stripes.

Getting a logo on the flag to mimic the ripples is hard. will try and find a way - but unlikely
depending on the logo's complexity.

That really looks good Chris! Being a coder more than an artist, I
wish that we had more ability to distort bitmaps with Actionscript
(besides just scaling them). BTW.. when opening your fla file, my
Flash MX shuts down with a crash. If your version is 7 or 8 I would
expect an "unexpected file format" error but with this one I get a
"has to shut down now.. sorry" message instead. Is the file ok?

I assumed that but I wonder why it crashes, rather than to give the
standard "unexpected file format"?

I am still using MX (not 2004) but it's ok, I decompiled your swf into
an MX fla in a matter of seconds. (I didn't think you would mind)
For the sWish version, I don't yet understand how breaking apart the
bitmap would let you distort it like that. Does that make it possible
to do in Flash?
It looks great Jeckyl! I never upgraded sWish past version 2 but even
that version has a lot of good effects built into it.

neat... no doubt...
Sometimes simple solutions are just out there, too obvious to
even realize.

The only challenge with this one is if you have some image on that flag.

Thanks for the file tho :)

tralfaz,
it is a Flash 8 file - i can save it down to MX04 if you'd like.

nice jeckyl - i am trying to do the same thing in Swishmax but can only get the imported bitmap to
move as a single flat image without any interpolation - tweaking the effect settings as much as they
allow - can this effect be scripted only in SM?

of course as soon as a i post that question i figured out what you meant by break into pieces - very
nice - i would have to say this is the way to go if you have a complex flag image - nice.

made with SwishMax. and as jeckyl says - once you know the exact sequence of steps (only about 3) it
takes under a minute to make.

yeah file size is high - relatively speaking - but bandwith shamndwith i guess :)

I do a lot of work for DVD/Video so in most cases quality is more of a concern over file size.

Tralfaz,
decompile all you want :)
it may be the bitmap in the latest FLA that could be killing flash.

here's one I whipped un in SWiSHmax ,, only take a minute (add the image,
breaking into pieces, apply a 3d flag waving effect) .. then added a flag
pole and some scrolling sky to make it pretty

Yeup .. it is a bit heavy on file size .. because of all the place tags
required.

But you can get some nice results.

The SWI file for the movie is there as well (change the .HTML into .SWI)

The wind is blowing one way for the flag and the other way for the clouds I
guess.
