flash (macromedia) : Newbie needs a little help

Hi,

New to forum and flash. I have some simple questions, and I'll order tham
from most important to least important (or, what I'm most tired of not being
able to figure out to what I haven't wasted as much time with).

I'm using the Flash 8 basic trial version. I thought I could switch back and
forth from basic to pro from one trial version, but I haven't figured that out
so mostly working in basic. I have relatively simple text and minor graphic
flash movie I've put together, and I've added it to a web page and it runs ok.

The questions:

1. My flash file, when I preview it in flash or on a web page, continually
loop. How do I make it just run once on my web page?

2. Ideally, for my first real attempt, I'd like to start with a white
background and have a gradiant fill sort of slide across the stage into place
until it covers the entire stage (along with the text stuff I already have
added). However, I can't even figure out how to just have a gradiant fill on
the background layer, because there really isn't a background layer. I've made
a new layer, but there doesn't seem to be any easy way to fill it with a
gradiant. I found a tutorial, but it references "click on the gray on the
layer labled "background", but I don't see any such thing.

If anyone can tell me where that box is, or how to just fill the stage area of
a layer with a gradiant, that would be helpful. I see in the properties box a
place to let me choose the bg color, but that's not a gradiant.

3. I have a copy of flash 2004 mx, and I can register it. How would it
compare to flash basic? Does MX do more, in general, than basic? Less?

Anyway, hopefully someone will help with the first two questions. sorrry for
the long post.

Hi

[quoted text, click to view]

The timeline run by default in a loop unless you force it to stay put.
To do it you need to add stop(); action on a frame you like the timeline to stop.

no, there isn't other way. What you did is the correct way to go.
In flash you can only change color, for graphics of any kind you need to place layer
on the bottom of all layers and cover the color to fake the background.

Well, I believe the key difference is that PRO version comes with large collections
of components. You can check macromedia.com , under products look for FLASH.
there should be a link to COMPARE versions which list down exactly what the difference
between PRO and BASIC are.

Create a new layer and label the layer "Background" drag this layer below all
the others...

then use your rectangle tool to create a rectangle...making it the same size
as your stage
then using the the color panels and gradient tools you can set the gradient
however you like
to have it come in from the left like you mentioned you will then have to
convert the rectangle to a graphic
if you would like the slide in to last thirty frames then you would create a
keyframe at frame 30 on the background layer be sure and make the rectangle a
graphic before you do this... then click on frame one
and set the postion of the rectangle off to the left side of the stage then in
the background layer right click
in the timeline anywhere in between the two keyframes and choose create motion
tween...

test your movie
