flash (macromedia):

If you open a version 8 file with version 6 (MX) you will get a fatal crash of Flash.
If you open version 7 file (MX2004) file with version 6 you will get "unexpected file format" error message.
I don't know what you get when opening version 8 fla with version 7 (MX2004). Should be one of those things above.

Editing Fla files created in the UK?? Clueless Here

I'm in the USA and I'm having problems making any edits to an fla file that was
created in England. Either the program crashes, or the edits just don't "take".
I'm using Flash MX (version 6). I don't know what version the original file
was created in...I'm guessing the latest. Has any one had any similar problems??

Thanks!!!

there is no difference in files, regardless Mac, Windows and any country of origin.
as long as you compatible with the version you should be able to run the file.
I toss files within Malaysia, USA, Germany, Japan and Korea on daily basis.
Never ever had any problem.

Either the file is newer version or corrupted.

I don't always get errors or crashes in Flash, most of the time it just seems
that any changes I make to one of the many fla files either doesn't seem to
show up in the swf, or doesn't go past the preloader...it just stops after the
preloader finishes, I'm guessing as soon as it loads that swf?? I didn't
realize that you couldn't open newer versions of fla files with an older
version. I guess I'll have to upgrade in order to edit this file.

Thanks for you help!
