Converting DVD video to web site in Flash

Converting DVD video to web site in Flash sigmadog

flash (macromedia): Greetings.

I have a client who wants to include their 9-minute trade show video on their
web site. Currently I have the video on a DVD and need to get it into a format
that can be imported into a Flash document. I've heard of some applications
that convert DVD video to other, importable formats, which I may end up using.
Or I might contact the creators of the video and have them export it in a size,
frame rate, and format that I can use.

Couple questions:
1. Anyone use any of these conversion apps and if so, do they work well?
2. Any methods I should use to control download of the video (segmenting,
streaming, etc.) basically, which is the best way to get a 9-minute video with
sound into a web site without annoying too many visitors?
3. Is Flash even a good solution here, or should I instead simply include the
link as a Quicktime movie?
4. Are these questions stupid or what?

Thanks for your input.

Any decend Video edditing software can do that (I use Premiere Pro).

If you don't have access to a streaming server use the methods for downloading
clips in Flash or the prebuilt components (or any combination)
I'd leave it in one peace, as long as you make sure that everything else is
loaded before start loading the movie, no problem there, you can always start
watching while downloading.

Flash is a very good solution, wide spread, you have a lot of control over
presentation, the codec is nt the best but raesonably good (a least since Flash
8)

Not stupid!

Thanks, 2m.

I have an old version of Premiere (6.5 - Mac). Don't use it much, but I'll
look into it's capabilities for importing from DVD's. My initial thought was
that it wouldn't be able to decode the files on the DVD, but if it can capture
it while it's playing, that would be ideal.

sigmadog,

Here's something I learned from this forum a while back (maybe a couple
months). Copy the .VOB files from your DVD to your hard drive. DVD video
is MPEG, so change the file extension to whatever.MPG and import those as
usual into your video editor.

I also use a freeware app (it was once freeware, but is not hard to
find) called DVDx. If you Google for it with diligence, you may still be
able to find the free version (an older version, but still quite useful).

I am doing the same thing for my company. Here is my process:
Drag vob file to HD, rename it .mpg.
Open file in VideoRedo (15 day free trial from website)
Clip it into segments or just leave it alone and save it out as an mpg.
Open in Flash 8 Video Encoder, create flv file.

The only time I use Premiere is when I need to add things like a fade to black
at the end.

FYI at medium settings using On2 codec the 9 minute video will be about a
35-40 meg flv file.
