flash (macromedia): With the internet flooded with over the top flash sites,
it refreshing to see a company use flash just to
get there point across.
On top of that they provided a fun ass game.

Here?s the link to the site and direct to the game:

I know it's going to sound offensive but I really don't know how to
phrase it any better so please forgive me for the following remarks.

The above URL has nothing to do with the following words "get there point across",
"provided a fun ass game" etc...
The same roll over for every single button, i was turning off my speakers after
the 5h link, just could not listen to this annoying PICK ME sound. General layout
and colors, uninteresting. Seem like lots of conflict in layout. You have this
weird looking font for the "little penguin" title, thin and black, mix with
what appear as Avenir typo which is clean and neat, easy to read. Really plain
background and dotted lines that has nothing to do with that type of topic.
Sticky Tape across the animal, every single link, I would imagine that on something
like a tag, photo or a note, not part of general layout..

I do understand tho that it is hard to fill out page with very little content
but it does not server it well if you over kill by making everything in tens of copies
and large size.

This is the typical example where flash, except for the game, was really unnecessary.
Simple CSS with nice layout, smaller content, more compressed and centered would be
way more appealing.

For instance:
http://joshuaink.com/
http://www.gr0w.com/about/
http://www.folietto.at/

just pleasant to look at....
did not have that impact from visiting your site, sorry.
Did not pass the message "across"...

The game :)

Oh man, where do I start. Very square penguin, does not walk, just glide like Jesus
or Superman. Could put a bit of effort and actually get someone to animate , what
would be around 5 to 8 frame walking sequence. The sound, Mario kind of sound which
does not really go along with penguins.
Than there are the bird :) Com'on , they move like they were made of cement.
Details are the one that compose the entire "thing" and your details suck.
It takes maybe 10 minutes to animate bird even w/o drawing skills. The site
shows zero effort knock off.

Totally does not get the point "Across".

I know talk is easy so I try to make a bird after I post the reply.
I google image for "birds", found few photos with variety of bird
positions and tried to pick such that would make a flying sequence.
Import to flash, lock layer and hand draw it. That is why it looks
lie pigeon morphing into a geese :)

http://flashfugitive.com/birds/bird1.swf

Than I was refining me search and found an actual "take off sequence"
on some bird lover site. Took 6 images from that sequence, again, hand trace it
and put into movie clip than motion tween.

http://flashfugitive.com/birds/bird2.swf

All took less than 20 minutes w/t pretty reasonable results.
At least, nicer than the gliding kite you put as the "bird" in your game.
Details make good stuff.
Not trying to be rude, so sorry if I offend you, just don't like that work
and think more effort should be put into it.

urami

I have to agree with _urami, and add that the collision detection in the
game is very poor. The bird doesn't follow the rounded 'humps', but rather a
square overlaid. sometimes when jumping you fall right through a hump too.

Nice birds urami_!

I am bother by the lack of details, and the repetition... PICK ME, PICK ME,
PICK ME!
How about KILL ME if I have to hear that one more time.
Seriously making the penguin walk would have taken maybe 30 more minutes, and
making those kite birds fly apparently could have been fantastic with another
20 minutes work. I don't understand getting as far as they did only to get lazy
on the details.

It's an OK site, but there are many other sites out there that do a much
better job of using Flash to get a point across.

Very disappointing.......
The title of this thread is .... How to use flash successfully.......Amazing
site.
Well, i always like to take a look at "Amazing site" threads but this one
leaves me feeling like ive been ripped off.

I also disagree with the statement that the internet is "flooded with over the
top flash sites". Check out the ratio of flash sites to html sites and you will
realise that the internet is far from flooded with flash sites.
Also you say "it is refreshing to see a company use flash just to get their
point across", what does this mean???The purpose of all websites is to "get
your point across" in some way or another, and most companies who use flash,
whether it is a banner or a full site, use flash to get their point across,
just the same as html sites.
And the "Bad-ass game". Jees, if this is your idea of a good game then you
need a trip to the city toyshop.
Cheers
Alan
