yes there is a simple way (i just explained it).
Animate the walk cycle *inside* a graphic symbol - graphic symbols can have any number of frames and
layers - this is one of the strengths of flash's timeline (movies within movies).
Make the character walk in place *inside* the symbol - you will need to copy frames/paste frames
into a new symbol - then create a new layer on main timeline and drag an instance of this new symbol
to the stage - delete all of your original layers from the main timeline - so now you should have
just 1 layer, with 1 symbol that contains your entire character (all its symbols and layers).
Now to make it walk across the stage - simply motion tween it from one side to the other.

I'v been using flash 8 for a couple of days, and i cant figure out how to get a
character to walk across the screen. I can use motion tweens etc. but i can't
understand how to get a motion tween running while the whole character moves. I
want to avoid frame-by-frame. Can someone either explain how or point me to a
decent tutorial please.
I guess i don't know enough yet then. Im not sure what you mean by "create the
walkcycle inside a graphic or movie clip symbol - animate the
walkcycle in place - make it a short loop" All i'v done so far is create each
moving part on a different layer as a graphic symbol then motion tweened each
one to give the impression of walking on the spot. Is there a simple way i can
group them all together and get it to move across the screen?
Ok thanks, i think i understand now.
One last question though, i watched your tutorial on drawing and animating a
character a little while ago, but now i can only seem to find it in an article,
has the video been removed from this site? and love your work btw.
