flash (macromedia):
I have a customer supplied .fla and which has some movies in the library (I
also have the .swf, but it needs to be modified). Everything appears to be
embedded in the .fla file. Some of the movies have references to .fla files.
Anyways, when I publish it, I'm not getting what I should, size of my .swf is
11k, and the supplied .swf is 500K. Do I need the original files, even though
they are in the library? I'm using Flash 8 on the PC and a .fla file was
supplied to me (not sure what version), but it appears I'm missing something.

No, you don't the files. Once imported, will be in the library. That is why usually
FLA are so much bigger than the compressed SWF file.

Maybe the file is stripped by the previous designer. Some do not like to give up
source and remove some thing, proofing client it wasn't good idea trying to find
another person, usually cheaper one, to continue work on same source.
By removing content, easy to show your "incompetence" and ridicule you in front
of client. After all, you can't fix it nor progress:) I don't say it in a bad way
nor do I try to feed you with evil designer conspiracy theory but I have many clients
with the very same scenario. I know flash so when I see the source I know what's missing.
Been dealing with it number of times.

If you can upload both so we can check it out, we could tell you what is up with that.
