Not speaking on anyone else's behalf, purely personal preference.

I would never use detection methods. It's so unpredictable
due to all the constant changes in browsers and security
settings that I could never assure clients to have user
conflict proof site. Sometimes the basic stuff works best
and never fails you.

"This site require this and that player, if you don't have
it, get it here, if you do have it, proceed here..."

Ta Daaaa !!!

Never fails, headache free, for ever browser compatible and the
client won't be harassing you to fix it with next player
or browser upgrades....

I went for uramis solutioin for ages, for the obvious reasons.

But there are downsides too:

People do tend not to read instructions, and a lot of - say version 7 movies
will wor to some extend in player 6, but appear to be broke at a certain point.

Even non-illiterate users, that know which version they have installed will
run into the eolas-crap.

So Im going for swfObject. it provides a very good solution, that is eaasy to
upgrade (one .js file for the whole site) and also fails gracefully. In
addition you can provide goo alterantive content for search-engines, screen
readers and Linux fanatics (most of them aka "Flash - for no good reason -
haters").
