it's always been, highlight them, right click over them and select "remove frames". What does "N
frames" mean?

How do I remove frames from a clip?
When I select N frames on the timeline and the apply Remove Frames, removed
are the last N frames, not those frames selected

i have never tried removing frames from an imparted AVI - it is possible you simply cannot - I
didn't know this when i initially responded.
As for adding AS - best practice is to always create a new layer - easier to manage/find your AS -
and then create a blank keyframe (F7) where you want to add the AS.

This is exactly how I am trying to do that.
N is just an integer number. I.e. if I select, say 15 frames in the middle
of the clip, then the last 15 frames are removed

In my FLA file I have a movieclip created by using Insert---New
Symbol---movieclip
Then I import an AVI file onto the stage of that movieclip. As a result I
have about 250 frames created in the movieclip timeline. Now I wanted to
remove some of them

Also I wanted to place some AS code in a frame. To do that I need to convert
this frame into a keyframe. When I right click this frame and select Convert
to Keyframes, the graphics of this keyframe gets replaced with that of the
first frame. So how do convert a frame to place AS into it?

weird.
Are you trying to remove frames from Video file ?
Because it should not happen to regular timeline unless
there is some kind of tween.
Any way to see that so we can't save time guessing ?
