flash (macromedia):
Ok, I'm an experienced developer, new to flash. I'm trying to understand a
flash app. I see that there are a bunch of ui components on various layers.
What I can't seem to find is how you construct and navigate sub layers. If I
click on the timeline and show and unlock the layer I'm interested in, small
circle appears on the layer. If I double click on this layer, it seems to
"drill down" into the sub layers (an expanding dotted box animates across the
screen). Is there a description of creating/managing these layers and
sublayers in the docs somewhere ?
Thanks in advance,

Fred

Fred, I'm not quite sure I'm following you, but let me see if I can help
clarify. I think what your talking about are 'timelines'. Think of the first
timeline you see when you open a doc as the 'main' timeline, now each 'symbol'
be it one of the three types: moiveclip, button, or graphic (not used much),
each has there own timeline also. Then you can create other symbols inside a
symbol, all of which have there own timelines. Think of 'layers' as the
z-plane, the depth stacking order of instances on the Stage within the same
symbol. Layers are for orginazation from a visual perspective, but are also
related to 'Depths'. Usually double-clicking a layer will give you the input
field for the layer name, but you may be entering the 'edit mode' for that
particular symbol. the 'circle' on the frame is indicating a 'keyframe' this
is one of the building blocks of the animating process, and you will use
keyframes often.

This should give you some info to look up in the docs, and hopefully help
clarify a few things for you. good luck :)

I see what I'm looking at are symbols which have subsymbols (and I'm getting
into "Edit in place mode" , I also see I can drag and drop the "folder" from
the library and that will be the whole "component" (looks like these should
have been made components but weren't) I'll keep digging to see how the
layers/frames/keyframes fit in with the symbols. Thanks again.
