flash (macromedia):
Shawn,

[quoted text, click to view]

If you're in Flex 2, then you'll have to redo your friend's gallery from
scratch -- in ActionScript 3.0. Quite a bit has changed between AS2 and
AS3.

[quoted text, click to view]

Your question is one of accessing XML, and you say merely that your
existing files are buggy. Have you done any troubleshooting yet?

HELP LOL - Flash AS2 XML in Player 9??? shotbyshawn

I migrated over to Flex 2 and ColdFusion MX7.0.2 from F8/PHP environment. Now I
have to redo a friend's gallery, it's Flash and AS2. It will load the file but
won't access the XML...it's buggy. Any idea what might be wrong? I have sandbox
security turned off in CF...but are there other security measures I need to
fix? I've been having bad luck trying to get Flash Player to access a lot of
stuff since I moved over, but this is absolutely critical since it's for a
professional site.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Shawn,

It's likely, then, that I misunderstand your implementation of Flex.
I've only used Flex Builder 2, myself ... and that IDE only produces
ActionScript 3.0 SWFs. I guess you're only using Flex for server-side
programming?

What error messages is Flash's Output panel giving you?

Shawn,

[quoted text, click to view]

B-b-b-but ... you said, "I migrated over to Flex 2 and ColdFusion
MX7.0.2 from F8/PHP environment" in your first post! And you keep
referencing Flex throughout:

* I am worried that there are a lot of ... issues in CF/Flex/Apache
* However thanks to the CF/Flex wizard, I just built my first db ...
* I can't even get the Ray Camden's Flex implementation ...

So I must be mis-reading something. :)

[quoted text, click to view]

No. It has no effect whatsoever on SWFs generated in Flash 8.

[quoted text, click to view]

Then it may be time to purposefully have it output data so that you can
troubleshoot.

[quoted text, click to view]

What sort of curve? What do you expect to happen in your Flash 8 SWF
that doesn't, in fact, occur?

[quoted text, click to view]

What beta? Flex is a fully released software package. Are you talking
about the Flash Professional 9 ActionScript 3.0 Preview alpha?

[quoted text, click to view]

Half your battle, or more, is that you can't see what's going on inside
a SWF once it's compiled. See if this article gives you a few useful tips
on debugging/troubleshooting.

Thanks David,

<If you're in Flex 2, then you'll have to redo your friend's gallery from
scratch -- in ActionScript 3.0. Quite a bit has changed between AS2 and
AS3.>

Not a chance LOL. I am not whatsoever viable in Flex/AS3 yet. It's going to be
a long journey being a designer, not a developer. I'm loving it though. This
has to be a Flash 8/AS2 project, or I'm poo-pooed.

<Your question is one of accessing XML, and you say merely that your
existing files are buggy. Have you done any troubleshooting yet?>

I've been using this setup for many months, and am very familiar with the
code, it's plug and play, basically (I've plugged-and-played in a PHP
environment many times with it:
http://www.kirupa.com/forum/showthread.php?t=202132

I am worried that there are a lot of security issues in CF/Flex/Apache that I
just don't even know about. I have sandbox security turned off, but, for
example, I can't even get the Ray Camden's Flex implementation of his blog to
run for various security issues...my only guess is that I'm in some sense
running into the same problem here.

I'm learning as much, as fast as I can, but as a designer, I find the new
environment very challenging.

However thanks to the CF/Flex wizard, I just built my first db from scratch,
and it actually works:) So in the long run, I will be very happy, but right
now, this as I say is the only critical thing on my list - learning Flex/CF can
take its sweet time...

I'm not using Flex at all for this project - it's pure Flash 8. The problems
seem to be in the fact that I redid my computer - switched from Apache/PHP to
Apache/ColdFusion as my server. Does having Flash 9 player and Flex on my
machine render AS2 from Flash 8 unintelligible in some sense by default?

The bad thing is the Flash side isn't generating any errors whatsoever...the
XML isn't mal-formed, and all the file/directory references are perfect. Flash
Output is staying totally quiet when I compile...blank. But I know it's working
fine because I throw it a curve, and sure enough, it catches my errors in other
places...could it be because I have the AS3 beta running? I am in AS2/F8 player
for the specs, no AS3...

Yes, it appears the fact I keep mentioning Flex is causing a lot of confusion.
Sorry:( It's just my head's way of thinking right now, because of the complete
change on my computer from Flash-PHP to Flex-ColdFusion. The terms are fused,
if you'll pardon the pun. I am trying to say, I am now using the Public Alpha
(not beta, sorry) of Flash 9/AS3 instead of just plain old Flash 8, too...but
it's all set up for this project correctly in the Publish Properties. Flex is
not part of the equation here at all. I've not even looked at AS3 in Flash
yet...

I'll have a look at your link, hopefully it will help:) It's quite possible
I've just missed something very basic in my haste to get this working after not
visiting Flash for a few months while trying to learn Flex.

I can't read the debugger to save my life, hopefully your link will
help...Shawn

Shawn,

[quoted text, click to view]

Heh ... only because it doesn't sound like you're actually using Flex,
the Flex framework, or anything involving Flex. Cold Fusion likely has
Flex-related APIs (I really don't know CF), but if you're not programming
Flash Player 9 SWFs in ActionScript 3.0, you're not using Flex. No worries,
though. :)

[quoted text, click to view]

Cool. That's fine. That application publishes the same AS2 it always
has. It effectively *is* Flash 8 -- accept it optionally publishes Flash 9
SWFs, and optionally publishes those SWFs in ActionScript 3.0. It does not,
however, include the Flex framework API.

[quoted text, click to view]

It's basically a general encouragement to debug and troubleshoot, using
the tools available to Flash 8. In the very least, using those tools should
give you a better feeling of what your SWF is actually doing as it hits (or
tries to hit) your XML. :)

Thanks David, very sound advice. I have X-Ray as well here, but half the time
it won't connect, and that point has just made me realize there is really
probably something wrong with my configuration, because a lot of people swear
by X-Ray. Going from a hosted PHP server to one I built myself running CF
through Apache has given me many problems, I am sure this is just another one
of them. I know it's my errors, our of lack of knowledge, and when I have the
money I will get someone to come in and reconfigure/install everything.

For now I'll be happy to get Flash and XML liking each other again though...so
it's off to debugging for the next while.

It'w working now, as is a bunch of other stuff...

CAUTIONARY TALE: when your I.T. Dept. gives you a router, there's a pretty
good chance it's broken...even if it doesn't appear to be...

Everything works after unplugging the router...
