Why won't Flash 8 let me encode .rmvb? Chris Jumonville

flash (macromedia):
Just a quick simple question. Flash 8 won't let me encode or import movies
with the file extension .rmvb. This is a RealPlayer movie basically. It seems
to only want to let me import standard movie file types like .wma, .mov, .avi,
etc. Either way this sucks.

Also another question. Lately any website I've built that includes movies or
clips on it I have been using Flash to encode the videos and convert them to
Flash videos basically. Is this a better idea as oppose to having all sorts of
random movie extensions on the site like .wma, ..avi, etc. I see alot of sites
that seem to prefer embedding movies with Windows Media Player or Quicktime but
I prefer Flash. Is there a con to using Flash to do this?

I hadn't heard of .rmvb, perhaps it's too obscure. More likely, it may have
license locks that prevent Macromedia/Adobe from using the format.

The way I see it, FLV is the best for streaming video across the web. The
disadvantage is FLV files can't be easily played by itself if downloaded to
disk.
